Interesting point to note is those communities which have set their content privacy to ‘members only‘ are not provided with the privilege of an topic search engine. Ain’t this rude? Not really, here is an insider. This modification is probably due to a hack that allowed an non member to browse ‘members only’ community’s content using the search option. It is highly possible that orkut came to know about a hack which allowed a user to browse the content in ‘members only‘ communities using the search feature thus removing the search bar in members only communities to fix the issue.

You can check the same issue by making your owned community’s content visible to members only and see for yourself if the search bar is visible or gone on a holiday.
